Presentation :
The redevelopment of the Hôtel-Dieu forms part of the urban area project for the town of Puy-en-Velay. By making the decision that culture and heritage are the levers of territorial development, the Hôtel-Dieu redevelopment project resulted in the establishment of a 'European centre for reflection and meetings on spirituality', and an 'Interpretative centre for the Architecture and Heritage of the Land of Art and History' (CIAP). Among the activities of the Puy-en-Velay renewal project, that of the Hôtel-Dieu, a major monument located beside the cathedral, is a flagship project of extraordinary importance. It represents, first of all, the essential completion of the enhancement of Notre-Dame cathedral's architectural heritage. Located in an intensely crowded and busy area, the Hôtel-Dieu, together with the General Hospital, forms part of the revitalisation of the upper town. It is also an emblematic centre for the urban area project thanks to the development of intellectual research activities, meetings, and exhibitions around 'cultural-religious' themes. A major monument of the town of Le Puy and of the Haute-Loire, the Hôtel-Dieu becomes fitting within the context of a site containing a cathedral, which is inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List as forming part of the 'Routes of Santiago de Compostela'.

The architectural modelling of the facades and large spaces express its architectural quality and its social function within the history of the episcopal city. Because of its inclusion as a listed building in the supplementary list of historic monuments and because of its location, the renovation of the building was carried out in accordance with appropriate archaeological, architectural and landscape constraints. Following its restoration, the Hôtel-Dieu encompasses several entities that work together both in parallel and independently; they consist of the 'Centre for Reflection and Meetings on Spirituality', the 'Interpretive Centre for the Architecture and Heritage of the Land of Art and History’ (CIAP), and all of the shared spaces (including temporary exhibitions, administration, and so on.)
